Fish Heads, Fish Heads

I caught seven fish on my recent visit to the Quabbin Reservoir. Sounds impressive, I suppose, until you learn that none of them were of a very impressive size. In fact, I threw every pumpkin seed and rock bass that I captured back into those clear northern waters.

The Quabbin supplies water for Boston and other areas of Eastern Massachusetts. It was once a valley and home to four Western Massachusetts towns, all from my home county, Hampshire County. To build the reservoir these towns were flooded in the late 1930 (or in the the bizarrely bureaucratic language of the wikipedia entry, the towns were "discontinued"). The shore of the Quabbin now lay outside Hampshire County, but the fishing there is very good. Just ask these guys.
