Sometimes I had to go to restaurants just to see them.

Rabbit Redux

It was a balmy 34 degrees this Sunday so I decided to head to Millennium Park to see how Chicago's downtown rabbits are dealing with the winter. They've gained some weight and the first few I met appeared a little skittish. Eventually I gained their trust and even sneaked into a rabbit burrow to capture these awesome shots.

While lying in the snow snapping pictures of this guy I reflected on two things. 1) I ate a roast rabbit once at a Portuguese restaurant that was really phenomenally delicious. I wonder why I've never eaten rabbit again considering how tasty it was. And 2) I've never read any John Updike novels. In fact, for a writer who is supposed to have had a wide ranging impact, I know few people (personally) who celebrate his work, bring him up in literary conversations etc etc. Is he the kind of writer that critics love but that is not on the radar of your average literary citizen? Is he just not of my generation? Probably I'm just not hanging out with the right crowd. The Updike crowd. I imagine the Updike crowd drinks highballs on the on the Upper East side. I'll look into it. Anyway, at least I read Watership Down. Actually, maybe thats why I never ordered rabbit again.

Mud Bugz

This little fellow was cruising around a creek bed covered in filth. When I offered to help him he tried to fight me, so I toyed with him for a while before throwing him back in the water. They are called "Cray Fish" where I grew up and occasionally "Craw Fish." In other areas people call them "Crawdads." I guess none of those names were appetizing enough. Now some folks call them "mud bugs." Mud Bugs? Anybody hungry for some mud... bugs....?

Trout Master

Here is a picture of a trout I pulled out of a Lake in Western Mass a few years ago. In retrospect, I have to wonder if I shouldn't have thrown the little guy back. But, as you can tell, I had quite an appetite back then. It was tasty!

Just Desserts

Jeany Choi's last comment post was about cooking Jackie Cat and eating him. What she didn't remember is that humans are delicious to some animals too. Jeany learned this the hard way when she was eaten by a bear. I thought about helping her, but I then I remembered her plans to eat my cat and her rocky relationship with Mr. Schnieder, so I let nature take its course.

Animals Are Delicious

In the short life of this blog we have seen some good looking animals. We have also seen some less-than-edible creatures. I'm posting this picture of some of Tom's famous BBQ to remind my viewers that many animals taste awesome. These are two beer-butt chickens, slow smoked, and some pork ribs. Getting Hungry?

The Night Javelina

I am afraid this grainy and blurry snapshot is the only proof I have of my encounter with two Javelina, (AKA Collared Peccaries). The Javelina are desert boar. I caught them here in the Chihuahuan desert of West Texas. They were friendly enough, but left before I could get a good snapshot. Quite frankly, these Javelina looked delicious. I expected to see them on the menu in every restaurant I went to in West Texas. They were no where to be found.
