The First Hermit?

As we wrapped up our day on Strong Island, Jeany found this playful hermit. No real shock to finding a hermit crab on Cape Cod. But is it a shock to discover that I have never bothered posting a hermit on Creature Comforts before.

And here I thought I was running out of animals.

Indeed, I have known many hermits in my day and loved a few. From tree crabs that I kept as pets as a child, to wild hermits encountered on the coastal shores, these animals have been with me for years. Strange then that they should never find themselves on the hallowed internet pages of my blog.

Perhaps the strangest thing is this: I once encountered the most ginormous hermit crab known to man. I did it during my first foray to the Cape with Creature Comforts, during my "Creatures from the Deep" Cape Cod photo shoot. For some reason, [a filing error caused by the wealth of great shots coming from that trip possibly], my Huge Hermit sighting never got published. Find it below in all its glory. With a standard Nokia cell phone to indicate the sheer size of this King Hermit. Remember, they used to make cell phones bigger back then.
