Clustered Turtles

These turtles are clustered at the base of the University of Texas Tower to commemorate the fatal rampage of sniper Charles Whitman, August 1, 1966. Whitman killed 13 people that day and wounded 31. The event is viewed by some as symbolic of the end of American innocence, at least as far as school shootings are concerned. I think these are common "painted turtles."

I always thought these were red-eared sliders, first identified by another great naturalist, Prinz Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied during his scientific expedition to North America in 1832-1834. Of Course Prince Max called them Emys elegans.

I once saw those turtles eat a sparrow. It was amazing and horrifying at the same time. Innocence lost indeed!

Here we have a great example of these creatures bringing people together. Dano, I had to drink myself to sleep last night after hearing your tale of the flesh eating killer turtles.
